A New Beginning?

Well, it's been a minute since I've posted here.

I have decided to embark on a new project, which hopefully I don't bail on after nine months, as is my wont. I am trying to broaden my musical horizons, both in terms of breadth and depth of appreciation. Although I would describe myself as having somewhat eclectic taste (I am likely one of the only people in the planet who would list both Slayer and Portishead among my ten favorite bands), I have never been one to listen to full albums. I tend to pick out a handful of songs from a given artist, and wear them out until I am completely sick of them. There are also entire eras of extremely influential music I know almost zero about- 1960's rock being a prime example.

Therefore, I have decided to issue the following challenge to myself: Listen to each of the albums included in the Top 100 Greatest Albums of All Time list published by Rolling Stone (the 2020 edition - and yes, I'm aware that the entire list is 500 Albums, but that feels a little too daunting for right now. Baby steps!). I'll also try to read a bit about each of the albums and the bands/artists behind them. I'll then write a brief entry on this blog about each of them. These entries may be me recapping what I've learned about the albums, me reviewing and commentating, or a bit of both. The effort that I put in to each recap may vary quite a bit as well. I'll start with album 100 and work my way to the top of the list- as I'm writing this, I'm on my second listen to Album 100 on the list, which happens to be 'Music from Big Pink' by The Band. Do I love it? Hate it? Ambivalent? Stay tuned to find out!

Cheers,

-Mercury

Also, while I may continue to write the occasional trivia quiz on this blog, that obviously isn't the main focus, and my LearnedCompanion series will likely remain a thing of the past, for the most part. If you're interested in playing quizzes that I've written, I've taken to posting the occasional quiz on Wikiquiz.org, which I've found really enjoyable both from a writing and grading perspective. Here's a sample quiz that I wrote recently:

I'm also working on getting back access to my old Sporcle account, where I used to write quizzes way back in the day before I was involved in online quizzing at all (I certainly don't remember the password, nor do I even remember what email I had associated with it, so this may be a challenge...). I hope to also post there at some point:
